English Language for students enrolled since 2019 – Unica CLA project

The UNICA-CLA English language Project is available for all students enrolled in any Degree Programme on or after the 2019/2020 Academic Year (both standard undergraduate and 5-year programmes).

For further information, please refer to the project handbook and all instructions published by the University Language Centre (CLA - Centro linguistico di Ateneo), by clicking on the link below.

English Language for students enrolled before 2019

For all students enrolled before 2019/2020, a computerised Level Assessment TEST administered by the University Language Centre replaces the English language exam.

The assessment will be in TEST form only, with no spoken assessment; and its outcome will be a binary PASS or FAIL result, without the award of a mark.

PLEASE NOTE: Starting from November 2022, the University Language Centre will allow each student to attempt the English Language Test up to three times per level (not per academic or calendar year). After three failed attempts, students will not be allowed to sit the next available test (in other words, they will need to skip the next scheduled test session), in order to ensure that they give themselves enough time to improve their competence.

Registration
The standard ESSE3 procedure applies for test registration.
Students will receive the actual timetable for sitting the language test after the deadline for ESSE3 registration, indicating both test date and time in case of rotation.

Test Venue
Students will sit the test in person in Room 58 at the University Language Centre – Sa Duchessa; any change to the default venue will be communicated in a timely manner.

Scheduled Tests
The next available TESTS are scheduled for:

  • 20th June 2024
  • 18th July 2024
  • 19th September 2024
  • 22nd November 2024

For further information on the test format and modes of administration, please refer to the University Language Centre’s website, following the link below

The following are alternative ways to obtain CFU credits for the English Language:

  1. A certificate documenting successful attendance of an English Language course issued by an Italian University Language Centre;
  • the rules on the level of knowledge required for the recognition of credits apply as above;

       2. An English Language exam or test at B1 level of the Common European Framework;

  • please note that the University will rely on the exam/test description to establish the proficiency level expected from the student, and that the test mark or score (if available) will not be counted in the student’s grade average.

       3. International English Language certifications, such as: IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, Trinity College London, Pearson Edexcel - Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) and Pearson General English, Oxford Test, ESOL, Gatehouse Award Classic.

Other international certifications may require further investigation before being accepted and commuted into CFU credits, and therefore they are not automatically validated as evidence of language proficiency.

Please ensure you produce all certifications, exams or test results to the Student Office within 5 years of their award.
