Abstract

An analysis of next generation network architectures enabling real time multimedia communications is presented in this paper. Current network architectures are not able to support real time multimedia communications for immersive application exploiting virtual or augmented reality. After the presentation of the state of the art a discussion of open issues and future research direction is presented. Attention is devoted to the analysis of the benefits that can arise when using Information-centric networks (ICN) as main component of the network architecture for assisting the deployment of AR/VR.
