Abstract
The Adalberto Libera’s frequent visits in the Sardinian capital, linked to the origins of his wife Stefania Boscaro, have been the occasion for the design of some remarkable buildings. Among all, the one with greater originality is the CASMEZ Pavilion designed for the Fair of Cagliari in 1953. The folded slab, slightly leaning on a pair of three-hinged arches, reminds of an origami or, even better, a Bedouin tent. It’s a simple and at the same time so complex idea in its execution, to be hardly perceptible in its real articulation and even more problematic to be graphically understood. The settling of the foundations that prevented its use (the building was designed as a shelter for models and message boards) brought immediately to a downgrade to storage area. The abandonment and the changes undergone by the structure are emblematic of the little consideration given for decades to part of the Italian Modern architecture. In the ‘60 the Fair Au-thority launched a program for the reorganization and expansion of its structures: several pavilions and a large conference centre were built, and the space designed by Libera was transformed. In 1973 the architects Ubaldo and Roberto Badas, in charge to convert the Libera’s work into a multifunctional hall, planned a project that involved the construction of perimetral walls: the original structure remained recognisable through the use of translucent windows. During the last decade there has been a gradual regression in the use of exhibition structures that nowadays appear oversize and are used only for short periods, a phenomenon common to many Italian Fair organizations. This provides the opportunity to step back to the original designs that, over time and with different motivations, suffered heavy modifications. The restoration work of the original structures, made possible by the cur-rent conservation techniques, will focus on approaches and methodologies that will give back the Pavilion the ethereal image that Adalberto Libera had so effectively drawn already in the early sketches.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
