Abstract
In a brief essay in 1971, Bruno Zevi emphasized how Romanesque architecture in Sardinia was influenced by architectural models that were transferred to the island without any critical interpretation. On the contrary, the results of this migration of models have undergone, over time, such manipulation as to form not an autonomous style but true inventions influenced by the context, by the author of the work, and by the availability of materials and construction techniques. The aim of this paper is thus to document, through archaic, traditional and modern architectural cultures, how this critical interpretation of foreign models has produced extraordinary unique works and, in some cases, has evolved into a "school", in the sense of a cultural and stylistic unity. This is not, therefore, an exhaustive catalogue of architecture in Sardinia, but a selection of a few examples characterised by this particular capacity for invention and variation of consolidated models, strongly marked by the identity of this island.File | Size | Format | |
