Abstract
This paper examines the series of terracotta sculptures created by Maria Lai between 1994 and 1996. It consists of forty small sculptures, mostly unpublished, on which little attention has been so far provided to by the criticism. The Sardinian artist opted to preserve these works in her personal studio as though they were private “notes”. This interpretation proposes to read them as an ex-post account of Arturo Martini legacy, resulting from her studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, where he lectured. During the nineties, Maria Lai, who has been recently internationally recognised, reconsidered her creative story, notably what concerned sculpting; she was meanwhile aware of the contemporary artistic scenario. These works are known as Telai di Maria Pietra, a title that was extended to all the series, although the meaning and the ispiration of works are much broader: from references to landscape, suggested by the terracotta surface, to the bond with the Sardinian sculptural tradition, still substantiated by her incessant need of remaining in touch with her own roots.File | Size | Format | |
