Abstract
This essay analyses the origin of the Dessì family in the Medieval Sardinia and reflects on the role played by its exponents. The sources allow us to certify the presence of the Dessì in the territories of central and southern Sardinia since 12th Century. During the period of Giudicati, the Dessì were part of the local élite: they tried to maintain this role even after the end of the two kingdoms of Cagliari and Arborea, first during the Pisan administration then during the Aragonese one. Finally, in the 15th Century and in the city of Cagliari, the documents register another branch of the Dessì family; they were merchants inserted in the Catalan commonwealth and were authors of an interesting attempt at social ascent.File | Size | Format | |
